THE IKNO GUIDE TO KEEPING THE CLASSIC FRESH

White Nike Air Force 1s are easy to wear — and notoriously easy to get dirty. The good news is that keeping them clean doesn’t require aggressive chemicals or complicated sneaker-cleaning tricks.
The best way to clean white Air Force 1s is to remove loose dirt first, use warm water with a small amount of mild soap, gently clean the leather and midsoles with a soft brush or cloth, and let the shoes air-dry naturally.
Preserving the box-fresh look and cleaning a worn pair are different jobs. Here is Flex’s personal Diamond White philosophy, followed by a separate practical care guide.

FLEX / FOUNDER OF IKNO / FIRSTHAND PERSPECTIVE
DIAMOND WHITE IS AN EXPERIENCE.
When I buy a fresh pair of Triple White Air Force 1s, I call them Diamond Whites. I am talking about more than a clean sneaker: the smooth leather, bright stitching, fresh laces and the feeling of opening that box. Everything comes together. A clean pair is one thing. A fresh pair is another.
In my experience, the first few wears have a presence of their own. Once I am reaching for a wipe, I know the pair is beginning another stage. It can still look good and have plenty of life left. But I do not expect cleaning to recreate that first wear.
PRESERVATION: BEFORE THE SERIOUS CLEAN.
My goal is to preserve the appearance I bought the shoe for. I pay attention to where I wear it, deal gently with minor dirt and keep different pairs for different days. I have found a preventative spray helpful, but it does not freeze a shoe in time. Check that any protector is suitable for the exact material and test a discreet area first.
The details matter to me. I notice the laces losing their brightness and the stitching changing colour. That is my experience of wearing white Forces over the years, not a promise that every pair changes on the same schedule. The first wear and the tenth are different experiences.
CLEANING: A DIFFERENT TYPE OF FRESH.
Cleaning has a place in my rotation. An older pair can be clean, comfortable and ready for everyday activities. I am not saying throw it away. I am saying that maintaining a wearable pair and preserving the appearance of a brand-new pair are two different goals.
I have put older pairs in the washing machine with Vanish and two or three towels, stuffed socks inside them, and dried them in the sun or a heated place. That is an honest account of what I have done with my own pairs once I accepted they were past the box-fresh stage. It is not my recommendation for preserving new leather.
A distinction for readers: machine washing, stain treatments and direct heat can damage footwear. Do not use my personal account as a care procedure. The material-aware hand-cleaning guide below is separate; follow Nike’s guidance and the instructions for your exact shoe and cleaner.
RESTORATION: KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO RECOVER.
A serious clean can improve an older pair, but I do not treat it as a reset button. To me, cleaned freshness is different from Diamond White freshness. That is a personal standard, not a claim that every worn shoe is beyond repair or that professional restoration has no value.
ROTATION: DIFFERENT PAIRS, DIFFERENT PURPOSES.
I am never afraid to plan for another pair. For people who share this standard, a fresh pair might be a monthly purchase; some choose a different rhythm. It depends on your lifestyle and what you can comfortably afford. Nobody needs a new pair every month to belong here.
Keep the everyday pair in use. Keep a fresher pair for the moments when that look matters to you. That is how I think about the Force: not disposable, but with different roles throughout its life.
Because a clean pair is one thing. A fresh pair is another. And Diamond White is an experience all its own.

THE PRACTICAL GUIDE / GENTLE HAND CLEANING. The steps below explain care for an existing pair; they do not promise to recreate newness.
HOW TO CLEAN WHITE AIR FORCE 1S: START WITH DRY DIRT
Before adding water or cleaner, remove loose dust and debris with a dry, soft-bristle shoe brush or clean toothbrush.
Take the laces out so you can reach the tongue, eyelets, stitching, and edges more easily.
Don’t immediately attack every mark with water. Getting the loose dirt off first prevents you from turning surface dust into grime while you clean.
WHAT TO CLEAN AIR FORCE 1s WITH
For most everyday dirt, you don’t need a specialized sneaker cleaner to clean white Air Force 1s safely.

For routine cleaning, mix warm water with a small amount of mild laundry detergent or dish soap.
Keep it diluted.
Dip a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush into the solution and gently work across the leather, stitching, midsole, and outsole.
You want the surface damp — not soaked.
White leather can take regular cleaning, but aggressive scrubbing and excessive moisture can do more harm than the dirt you’re trying to remove.
CHECK THE MATERIAL BEFORE THE CLEANER.
The Air Force 1 name does not mean every pair needs the same treatment. Use this check before applying the white-leather routine below.
| Your pair | Start here | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth white leather | Dry-brush loose dirt, then use a soft cloth with a small amount of diluted mild cleaner. Test a hidden spot first. | Soaking the upper, harsh scrubbing or treating every scuff with an abrasive eraser. |
| Suede or nubuck panels | Begin with the shoe dry and a brush suitable for suede. Follow a material-specific care guide. | Using the leather routine across the whole shoe or saturating the nap. |
| Mixed materials or special finishes | Identify each panel and check the exact edition’s care instructions. Treat a small area separately. | Assuming fleece, printed details, patent finishes and textured overlays can all be scrubbed alike. |
IKNO’s practical rule: clean the part that needs attention, with the gentlest suitable method. A rubber-sidewall treatment is not automatically an upper treatment.

HANDLE STAINS ONE AREA AT A TIME
Not every mark requires a complete cleaning.
For stubborn areas, work on the stain individually instead of repeatedly scrubbing the entire shoe.
For a stubborn mark, identify the material before trying a stronger treatment. Start with diluted mild cleaner on smooth leather and follow the cleaner’s instructions. If you use a cleaning eraser on the rubber sidewall, work gently and keep it away from delicate uppers, printed details and special finishes. Test any product on a discreet area first.
Start gently.
You can always clean an area again. You can’t undo damaged leather.
CLEAN THE LACES SEPARATELY
Fresh shoes with dirty laces still look dirty.
Remove the laces and wash them separately with mild soap or detergent and water.
Let them air-dry completely before putting them back in.
And when a pair of white laces has reached the point of no return?
Replace them.
Sometimes a fresh set of laces does more for an older pair of AF1s than another thirty minutes of scrubbing.
DON’T FORGET THE MIDSOLE
The white rubber midsole is one of the first places an Air Force 1 starts showing wear.
Use a soft brush, cloth, or cleaning eraser along the sidewall, around the outsole edge, and especially around the textured areas where dirt collects.
Cleaning the midsole can make the entire sneaker look dramatically fresher — even when the leather didn’t need much work.
HOW TO DRY AIR FORCE 1s AFTER CLEANING
Once you’re finished cleaning, wipe away any remaining solution with a clean, damp cloth.

Then leave the shoes to dry naturally.
Stuffing them lightly with clean paper or using shoe trees can help them maintain their shape while they dry.
Avoid trying to speed things up with excessive heat.
Give the leather time.
THE BEST CLEAN IS THE ONE YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO
The easiest way to keep Triple Whites fresh is simple:
Don’t let small problems become big ones.
Wipe off new marks when you notice them. Brush away surface dirt before putting the shoes away. Rotate your sneakers instead of beating the same white pair every day.
Getting the fit right matters too — check our Air Force 1 Sizing Guide before choosing your next pair.
Looking after your pair is only half the story — see How to Style Air Force 1s for outfit ideas built around the shoe.
Five minutes of maintenance every few wears is much easier than trying to rescue months of built-up grime.
WHAT TO AVOID
Skip the aggressive stuff.
Don’t soak your leather Air Force 1s. Don’t attack them with harsh chemicals. Don’t scrub the leather like you’re cleaning a kitchen floor.
And be careful with random sneaker-cleaning hacks online. A method that works beautifully on canvas or fabric isn’t automatically safe for leather.
When you’re unsure, start with the gentlest method first.
BUILD A SIMPLE AF1 CLEANING KIT
You don’t need a shelf full of sneaker-care products.
Keep a few basics around:
- Soft-bristle shoe brush
- Clean microfiber cloths
- Mild dish soap or gentle laundry detergent
- Cleaning eraser
- Shoe trees or clean paper
- Fresh white replacement laces
That’s enough for most everyday maintenance.
KEEP THEM READY.
White Air Force 1s are simple.
That’s exactly why every crease, scuff and stain gets noticed.
Take care of them regularly and you won’t need some massive restoration every time you want to wear them.
Clean often. Clean gently. Keep the icon white.
